HVAC Filters Explained: MERV Ratings, Filter Thickness, and How They Affect Airflow

HVAC Filters Explained

Learn how MERV ratings, filter thickness, and airflow all work together to impact your HVAC system performance, indoor air quality, and overall comfort.

What Is an HVAC Filter?

An HVAC filter captures airborne particles like dust, pollen, pet dander, and debris before they circulate through your home. It plays a critical role in protecting your system and improving indoor air quality.

  • Protects your HVAC system from buildup
  • Improves indoor air quality
  • Supports proper airflow
  • Extends system lifespan

Understanding MERV Ratings

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how effectively a filter captures particles. Higher ratings mean better filtration—but also more resistance if your system isn’t designed for it.

MERV 1–4

Basic protection. Captures dust and large particles. Minimal air quality improvement.

MERV 5–8

Standard residential filters. Good balance of airflow and filtration.

MERV 9–12

Captures finer particles like pet dander and smoke. Great for allergies.

MERV 13+

High-efficiency filtration. Requires systems designed for higher resistance.

Filter Thickness: 1” to 5”

1-Inch

Most common. Needs frequent replacement. Can restrict airflow with high MERV ratings.

2-Inch

Better airflow and longer lifespan than 1” filters. Good middle-ground option.

4-Inch

High surface area. Supports better airflow and higher filtration.

5-Inch

Best performance. Excellent airflow with high filtration when system is designed for it.

How Thickness Affects Airflow

Many people assume thicker filters restrict airflow—but in reality, thicker filters often improve it.

  • More surface area = less resistance
  • Air flows more evenly across the filter
  • Filters last longer before clogging

Example: A 1” MERV 13 filter can restrict airflow, while a 4” MERV 13 filter can provide strong filtration without reducing performance.
